What is Child Life?

My elevator speech of what a child life specialist is: Child Life Specialists provide children in medical settings with creative opportunities to cope with what is going on around them. This can be done in many ways such as: encouraging medical play to become familiar with the tools that are so often being used on them, preparing a patient and their family for an upcoming procedure, providing sibling support, and connecting the family with resources such as Make a Wish or adaptive sports. Child Life Specialists attempt to bring light into some of life’s most difficult situations. We promote each child to learn through play and creative outlets! Our field is growing into many different settings, from inpatient units, oncology clinics, private practice, pediatric hospice, and children of adult patients.

Here is a great video explaining Child Life!
